An echocardiogram is a scan of the heart. It is sometimes just called an 'ECHO'. The scan uses ultrasound, which is a very high frequency sound which you cannot hear, but it can be emitted and detected by special machines. The scan creates pictures of the heart muscle, the heart chambers, and structures within the heart such as the valves.
Echocardiography is established as the single most important investigation in patients with heart failure.
The purpose of an Echo is to confirm or exclude a diagnosis of heart failure. It will assist in identifying the cause of the heart failure and will influence future management and treatment.
Traditionally Echo’s have been performed in a Secondary Care (Hospital) setting, usually by way of a referral by a GP to a Consultant who then requests an Echo via an out patient appointment.
PDS are able to provide Echocardiography services for Waiting List Initiatives or recurrent services. The service can support existing services, such as Heart Failure Clinics and GPwSI services.
PDS are happy to work in partnership with local Hospitals or we are able to provide stand alone, direct access services if required. We are happy to develop services for Practice Based Commissioning consortia.
All Echos will be conducted by a British Society of Echocardiography accredited Echo technician, using the GE Vivid-i Cardiac Ultrasound Machine machine.
The PDS Echo service is supported and quality assured by a Consultant Cardiologist. Consultant reporting is available on request for all echocardiograms conducted.
PDS manage all the patient administration from booking appointments, issuing reminders, providing patients with educational materials prior to their scan appointment and conducting patient satisfaction surveys to ensure the service we provide is of the highest quality. We are choose and book compatible
A full report will be supplied to the referring practice within 48 hours of the scan taking place unless an urgent referral is indicated whereby the referral will be forwarded within 24 hours along with digital images of that scan.
Digital images of any scan conducted can be uploaded onto a hospitals digital archiving system. Alternatively, if a Trust uses video tape to archive PDS will supply a digital CD of images allowing them to be viewed on any desktop computer.
PDS are also able to provide a near patient BNP testing service with point of care results. This is a fantastic addition to a Primary Care based echo service.
PDS are also able and happy to provide services to Independent Hospitals and privately funded patients.
